P0442 GMC: System Overview The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) assesses the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system for various conditions, including large and small leaks, excess vacuum, purge flow anomalies, and faults in fuel level, and fuel pressure sensors, as well as EVAP Purge and Vent Valve faults. The PCM monitors the Fuel Tank Pressure sensor to gauge the vacuum/pressure in the EVAP system. It commands the EVAP Purge Solenoid and EVAP Vent Valve ON to apply engine vacuum to the EVAP system and turns them OFF once the desired vacuum level is achieved. This test confirms the ability to establish a vacuum in the EVAP system, with a failure indicating potential large leaks or restrictions.
